Synopsis

Dylan Jewers is a Dartmouth folklorist and music producer whose obsession with roots music led him to establish Big Turnip Records, a label devoted to recording and preserving roots music in Atlantic Canada.

In this one-hour documentary, Jewers is on the hunt for unique traditional music and he’s taking us along for the ride. Drawing inspiration from renowned Nova Scotia folklorist Helen Creighton, Jewers is on a personal quest to track down unique Nova Scotian musicians whose music bridges the gap between the past and the present.

Nova Scotia has a rich musical landscape that is not only deeply rooted in the culture, but also continues to thrive and evolve. Teaming up with sound engineer Joel Waddell, Jewers heads out on the road to connect with and record musicians and tradition bearers in the Mi’kmaq, Black, Acadian and, Celtic communities throughout the province.

Like Creighton before him, Jewers takes on the role of musical and cultural facilitator, allowing the people he meets up with to tell their stories in their natural settings, in their own way—stripped down, raw, and authentic.
